Cool, Cute and Cruel silhouettes research

My task for this project was to choose six character types. Next, create a set of cute, cool and cruel silhouettes and turn three silhouettes into fully coloured characters. In the end, use them in my one cut comic.

Example work

Cute characters tend to have curves, but one of the most significant things is the poses and the way they act. In the example work of the artist, we can see a female character with a figure inspired by a shape of a circle and a characteristic pose typical for cute girls in manga or anime. Following this example, I used a cute pose with knees bent inwards and waving with one hand.

As an outfit for all the silhouettes, I decided to pick a swimming costume. It's because in most romance anime or manga there is always a scene where the main protagonist goes to the beach with friends, which are usually two rivals for the love of the main character. It inspired me to create these three different versions of a lover. I found an example of a cool pose on Pinterest and applied in creating a silhouette above. This type of character tends to wear comfortable clothes, which makes the body shape change for more rectangular.

Cruel characters tend to be angry or jealous. They tend to clench fists to express it. Cruel characters tend to be angry or jealous. They tend to clench fists to express it. As an example, I drew one of the fists clenched and the other hand out holding a broken heart. It shows that cruel lovers are often the ones who destroy the love around them.

I was always amazed by how many outfits with the same theme of a hat and long jacket Queen Elizabeth has. Although they vary in colour and shape, it's a universal look that fits almost every occasion. I tried to create a similar pattern of the jacket and a hat with some changes to shapes. For the cute silhouette, I used a round hat and made the body a bit rounder to make it look gentler.

Formal clothes tend to be straight and have a rectangular shape. It makes people look elegant and cool in a fancy way. I used this kind of design to create a rectangular coat and hat to make the character look cool. I also drew a waving pose to show friendliness.

In many stories cruel Queen is the type of person who overuses her power to rule the world.  A good example is Evil Queen in Snow White. She will do anything to become powerful. Inspired by the picture of Evil Queen, I add a pointed crown to the silhouette that significance craves for power. The same waving pose shows the fake kindness and the triangular body shape to show the true nature of the cruel character.

As an inspiration for silhouettes of a rockstar, I found a few pictures of Oliver Sykes from different years. Looking at how he evolved from a cute rockstar wearing hoodies to a cruel-looking rockstar with vampire's teeth and body covered in tattoos inspired me to create three different silhouettes.

I drew a boy in a baggy, oversize hoodie with long soft hair to create a cute look. Cute characters tend to be friendly. I used a pose with hands up to show the character singing with his audience.

Tank top and sticking out hair is a look that many singers use to look cool on the stage. I combined it with Oliver's pose of how he lifts his head and the microphone up when he screams to create a cool rockstar's impression.

The third pose was similar to the one in the second silhouette. I made it more dramatic by bending the character's knees and lifting hands.  To make it look cruel I made the hair spiky. I also added some muscle in the top part of the body to give it this triangular shape.

Photographers usually make various poses while taking photos. I tried to incorporate some of these poses in my work to fit into the given shapes. Inspired by the picture, I drew a photographer kneeling. To make it fit into a circular shape, I made him kneel on one knee.

When thinking about cruel photographers, I imagine a stalker following people everywhere. To show that, I used a standing pose with spread legs to show that this photographer is not the type to hide or kneel to take pictures. This person is straightforward and makes people aware of his presence wherever he goes, even if it makes people uncomfortable.

A cool photographer is a person that enjoys photography as a hobby and takes it easy. Inspired by the picture, I drew a relaxed photographer in a half-kneeling pose.

Inspired by a cute doll and a clown from the movie 'It', I drew a dress with puff sleeves and a skirt that made the character look round. I also created a skinny body and egg-shaped head.

If I could change anything, I would make its legs and arms shorter.

To make the character look cool, I drew it in a loose dress and made it juggle balls. The loose dress made the body look squarer.

The head came out too round. I should've added a hat or changed the hairstyle.

To make the clown look cruel, I made him thinner with pointy shoes and ripped clothes. To make him look evil, I pick a pose where he throws a pie.

Now that I think about it, I could add a pointy birthday hat to complete the look.

Inspired by different cosplayers, I created three versions of a devil silhouette. To create a cute character, I used the design of the dress from the picture as a reference. I tried to draw a cute pose with hands hidden behind the back, but I don't think it worked well.

I decided to make a cool pose with one arm on the waist and the other on the head to make it look like the character is posing for the picture. I decided not to add wings because it would change the body shape. I wanted to keep it square shaped.

The cruel cosplayer silhouette was my favourite. The triangular shape of the whole body and sharp edges of wings made it look like a cruel devil queen.

Character turnarounds

The first character turnaround I chose was a cruel cosplayer. I love how wings affect the body shape and make a whole silhouette look powerful and evil. After drawing a character in a bodysuit, I realised it was boring. Inspired by pictures of cosplayers, I added some decorations such as fishnets and jewellery set to complete the outfits.

I chose black for the colour of the outfit, which gives us cruel character vibes. Few shades of pink for skin and eyes to create contrast between dark and light colours.

I like how the character turned out. However, I am not satisfied with the poses. Some of them doesn't seem very accurate and, it's something I hope to work on in the future.

Although I love the look of this character, I think I made a mistake giving him hair with shaved sides. The original idea was to draw a bit longer hair like an emo rock star, but somehow I changed my mind and gave him shorter hair. He still looks like a cool singer, just not necessarily a rock star.

In the second drawing from the side, the pose gives away the fact that it is supposed to be a rock star. But in the rest of the pictures, it looks like a punk.

Although the clown's design is simple, it looks cute with all these curvy lines and shapes. Although the clown's design is simple, it looks cute with all these curvy lines and shapes. His eyes make him unique. It's because we can't read emotions from it. Likewise, toys that don't have a mouth, such as Hello Kitty. This way, we could only assume that the clown is friendly because of the big smile he's wearing.
