1. How has your work evolved during this module?
The overall module taught me a lot, including script writing and drawing cartoons. However, the pocket cartoon was something that got me out of my comfort zone as I wasn't very good at making political cartoons. At first, I found it extremely hard to come up with any joke, but I learnt how to create original ideas based on the news.I also improved my story-writing skills. Although I finally started to understand how to write a script, I prefer to illustrate it rather than write it. It is an important skill that will come in handy in the future, but I feel like I am lacking more when it comes to illustrating the given script. The opportunity we had to practice during the module gave me an idea of how it works but it's definitely something I would like to improve in the future.
2. In context, please outline your contribution to the Parkroyal project.
From the randomly chosen creatures, I picked two characters. One of them was Bubbles, and another was Zoran, the turtle drawn by primary school kids. I redrew these characters to fit into a cartoony style, which was used to create bookmarks for the children.
Another part of my contribution to this project was creating a three-page comic about these creatures saving the rainforest teaching the kids about teamwork and saving the planet. My comic and character design were then printed alongside other students' work to create a volume and were given to children.
I think I used appropriate style and content for the children's age as they loved everyone's work.
3. Please provide an example of a design problem you encountered and how did you resolve this?
During the Parkroyal project, I came across a problem with choosing an appropriate style for children. I never drew a children's comic before, so I found it hard to tell what was too much or too little when it came to designing all the backgrounds in the comic. I didn't want my comic to look like an illustrated book for 3 years old, but I also didn't want to make my designs too overwhelming and look like books for a bit older children.
My aim was a ten years old audience and by researching some book covers of children's book illustrators, I successfully bring my illustrations to these standards.
4. Who is your audience for your single panel cartoon and how have you tried to appeal to this audience?
For my pocket cartoon, I aimed at an adult audience that is engaged with the news on daily basis. I wanted to turn the depressing news into something people find funny. I tried to fit the style of my illustration to be suitable for adult viewers. To do that I created bubble head characters.
5.Please provide at least one example of working collaboratively during this module
The Parkroyal project was a collaborative project as it allowed the whole class to work with characters designed by children to create comics for them. Few of our class representatives who visited the school were passing on any messages from the children as to what they expected from the comic and feedback.
