Developing Idea
After a feedback form our presentation with three ideas, I decided to go with the Queen's Misfortune story for two reasons. Firstly, majority of people in our class liked this idea the most and secondly my witch working in a hotel was compared to Hotel Transylvania kids’ movie. I didn’t realized there is similarity until someone pointed it out. I think it’s a good think because I won’t go with something that’s already out there.
Firstly, I wrote a pitch as well as 200 words synopsis.
Queen’s Misfortune- Script
Pitch
How far would you go to climb a social ladder? For Mia there is no limits when it comes to achieving her goals. A spoiled princess makes enemies everywhere she goes, which leads to a curse being thrown upon her, but is this enough to teach her a lesson?
200 words synopsis
Mia is a daughter of the King of Poland, and her family is very well off. However, one day her father makes a decision for the family to move to France due to some war conflicts nearby. She started her debut in a society of the wrong foot and made enemies with people with high social status. Despite that she ended up getting married to a king and having a happy family. However, her happiness doesn’t last long due to a curse of misfortune. Her husband left her, and people didn’t want her to get into political matter. She ended up as abandoned Queen with no duties, completely useless. In the end she decides to try to get rid of the curse by using her status to do something good for this country. Building schools for poor girls to get education makes her feel fulfilled in life and brings her peace.
Presentation
Target audience
Last year's Comic Con experience showed me that fantasy genre can be sold to many age groups, so in this project my target audience would also be teens, young adults and adults. Usually I like to have the freedom to create more mature content with blood, but also in this case the story will include death. While it needs to appeal to these age groups, it can't be too violent when it comes to death scenes. Another thing to consider is that the age rating for death and violence is 13 years old.
A good way of reaching this type of audience would be to post it online, as i'm not planing any comic con trips at the moment. However, I am planing on starting to think about what comics companies like Image looking for. One of the genres are fantasy stories, which is why I would like to make my story fantasy.
Character design
Mia's sister Anna. I used the technique of using round shapes to make her appear friendly, I also used lots of yellow in her colour palette as she is a cheerful girl with big dreams.
Second is Mia. In her first deign she had short hair and lots of details on her dress. I decided to simplify all the details and replace the with purple gradient to make the dress look less boring and flat.
As a signature of the family all people in Hazel family wear red poppy to represent their origins.
Stanley and Catherine are parents of Mia and Anna. I decided to give them matching outfits to represent their kingdom and relationship.
Same case with Prince and Queen. They wear matching clothes and accessories to represent their kingdom. They both wear red to create a contrast between two families but also to distinguish who is good and evil.
Thumbnails
During my research I found the mansion that once was owned by the Leszczynski family. So I decided to use that as reference.
Originally my script turned out to be 16 pages instead of 12. I shortened it by drawing thumbnails and getting rid of panels that weren't needed. I also made sure to numerate each panel and page. In the end I ended up with roughly 5 panels a page.
